West Fork of Oak Creek No. 108
West Fork Trail is truly a gem in the Coconino National Forest, offering a uniquely beautiful experience every season. Springtime brings colorful songbirds, while autumn transforms the canyon into a tapestry of red and gold leaves. In winter, icicles and lingering snow create a magical atmosphere against the red rock.
The trail itself is easygoing, though it does require crossing the stream several times. You'll find stepping stones in some places, but occasionally, a few steps through shallow water may be needed. The first three miles of the trail are well-marked and maintained, making it accessible for most hikers to enjoy this spectacular natural beauty.
For adventurous hikers, West Fork offers the option to explore beyond the maintained section into the rugged beauty of the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. The 14-mile route from SR 89A to FR 231 (Woody Mountain Road) is demanding, requiring wading, boulder hopping, and even some swimming as the trail eventually transitions to the stream bed. If you're up for this full canyon journey, it’s essential to be prepared for challenging conditions and consult trail advisories before setting out.
For a more enjoyable experience, aim to visit during off-peak times, such as mornings, weekdays, or the off-season, when the trail is quieter. And as always, help preserve this stunning landscape by practicing Leave No Trace principles: avoid littering, resist picking flowers or leaves, and refrain from activities like rock throwing or trail short-cutting. Treating this trail with respect ensures it will remain a natural treasure worth revisiting.
West Fork Trail operates on seasonal hours: from April 1 to October 31, it’s open from 7 a.m. until dusk, and from November 1 to March 31, hours shift to 8 a.m. until dusk. With amenities including picnic tables, restrooms, and parking, visitors can also enjoy the scenic Call of the Canyon Picnic Area, managed by a concessionaire.
Fees are $12 per vehicle (up to 5 people) or $3 per individual for walk-ins, cyclists, and buses. The Grand Annual Red Rock Pass is accepted here as well.
Spring through fall is the best time to visit, though heavy use is common, especially in summer and on weekends. Visitors should note that the trail may close during high fire danger periods, typically in late June, and dogs must remain leashed according to federal regulations.
For essentials, Sedona, AZ, is the closest town, offering a convenient base for those exploring the area.
To reach the West Fork Trailhead in Oak Creek Canyon, head 17.5 miles south from Flagstaff or 9.5 miles north from Sedona along Highway 89A. The trailhead is located about halfway between mileposts 385 and 384 on the west side of the highway. Look for a paved lane that leads past a few creekside houses and park at the Call O' The Canyon day-use area.
For precise navigation, use the GPS coordinates: 34°59'26.5"N 111°44'34.6"W. The route is scenic and fully paved, making it an easy drive from either Flagstaff or Sedona.
