O'LEARY PEAK TRAIL

O'Leary Peak distinguishes itself as a lava dome volcano, a contrast to the cinder cone formation of Sunset Crater Volcano.

The hike follows a rugged roadbed riddled with potholes, rocks, and eroded sections. Pets are welcome on leash, though summer temperatures can pose risks to animals left in vehicles.

Initially accessible by vehicle up to the pass between O'Leary and Darton Dome, the route now entails an additional mile of hiking due to road closure. En route, hikers traverse Sunset Crater's striking lava flow, a sight worth exploring off the beaten path.

Ascending involves navigating six switchbacks leading to a tower situated away from the peak itself. To reach O'Leary's western summit, hikers must veer off the road between the two summits and ascend to the top, which presents the most challenging segment of the climb.

At an elevation of 8,916 feet, the tower offers breathtaking vistas, encompassing the Inner Basin of the San Francisco Peaks, the crater of Sunset Crater, and the northern expanse of the Painted Desert.

Rating: Strenuous

Hiking time: Allow 4 to 5 hours round-trip

Notes: Be prepared for abrupt weather changes; weather extremes are not uncommon. Although spring is usually mild, heavy snowfall can occur. Summer days are warm with temperatures in the 80s. Expect short afternoon thunderstorms July through September.

Location: Northwest of Sunset Crater

GPS (Map): 35°22'19.9"N 111°32'28.7"W

USGS Map: O'Leary Peak

Access: From Flagstaff take US 89 north. Turn right on the road to Sunset Crater National Park. Just before entering the park, take a left on Forest Road 545A. Drive this road about 1/4 of a mile, which is paved. Park here and hike the rest of the way to the top.
